Ein Abend in Wien

The concept of Pandora's Music Box was resurrected in 1991 for a one-of festival at the same location under the moniker "Ein Abend in Wien". If and when I have time, I'll start uploading any info I have on http://ein-abend-in-wien.blogspot.com

Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth is a seminal American alternative rock group formed in New York City in 1981. In their early career, Sonic Youth were associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City, but have outlasted most associated bands. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, Sonic Youth carried out their interpretation of the punk rock ethos throughout the evolving American indie underground (as the title of their documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke demonstrates) that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. They have found moderate mainstream success, and are generally seen as one of the leading alternative rock groups of their time. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_youth)

Scheduled
Saturday, 12 October 1985, "Dance Hall", 03:10 - 04:10

Line up
Thurston Moore – guitars, vocals; Lee Ranaldo – guitars, vocals, organ; Kim Gordon – bass, guitar, vocals; Steve Shelley – drums

Set list
01 Green light
02 Brother James
03 Death Valley '69
04 Brave men run
05 Flower
06 I love her all the time
07 Ghost bitch

Recording
A recording of the above set list exists, however, it's authenticity is disputed.

Emmanuel Tremblay comments on this recording: "I found this was a fake (if I remember correctly a mix of a few sources including 04-01-85)" -- he definitely knows his stuff, so this is probably true. It unfortunately also involves adjusting a bunch of statistics, a quite unpleasant task, so -- for now -- heed his wise warning. (http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/cc/101285.html)

Other info
Sonic Youth also played at Ein Abend in Wien, the one-off successor to Pandora's in 1991. More on this later. Maybe.

Theme from Pandora's Music Box 83

I was amazed to discover today that there was an official Theme from Pandora's Musix Box 83. The artists were called The Music Box Orchestra, and I have no idea who they were.

A one-sided 12" was released on a label called either Pandora Records or Pandorecords. Apperantly, a limited edition "rare Berry Visser production". Visser was one of the founders of Mojo Concerts, the organisers of Pandora's Music Box. Willem Venema was in charge of music, Visser was in charge of the "phenomena", alienating musical and theatrical effects in the venue.

If anyone could lend me $162, I could get a copy from these guys http://www.musicstack.com/item/40637141/music+box+orchestra/theme+from'pandora's.

Clock DVA

Clock DVA is an electronic music group from Sheffield, England. The group was formed in 1978, with two members, Adi Newton and Steven "Judd" Turner. Along with contemporaries Heaven 17, Clock DVA's name was inspired by the Russian-influenced Nadsat of Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange; "dva" is the Russian word for "two". The group was originally known for making a form of experimental electronic music involving treated tape loops and synthesisers.

Other info
The Box (also on Pandora’s 1983) were Paul Widger – guitar, Charlie Collins – saxophone and Roger Quail – drums; all ex-Clock DVA.

Newton, Browse, Dennis and Sanderson went on to form The Anti Group, who played at Pandora's 84.

Carruthers would join Siouxsie & the Banshees (also on Pandora's 83) in 1985, replacing Robert Smith.

Dennis and Sanderson toured as Jeffrey Lee Pierce Quartet to promote his Wildweed album and as such played Pandora's 85. They are the only artists appearing at all three Pandora's Music Box editions. Sanderson joined the Gun Club in 1987 and stayed until 1992/1993. He also played in World of Twist, who played at Pandora's successor Ein Abend in Wien in 1991. After World of Twist, he joins the Jesus & Mary Chain, who had played Pandora's 85.
