Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth is a seminal American alternative rock group formed in New York City in 1981. In their early career, Sonic Youth were associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City, but have outlasted most associated bands. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, Sonic Youth carried out their interpretation of the punk rock ethos throughout the evolving American indie underground (as the title of their documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke demonstrates) that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. Anne Clark and band

Anne Clark (born Croydon, London, England, 14 May 1960) is an English poet and songwriter. Clark is mainly a spoken word artist, but she also plays piano and occasionally accompanies herself, with piano and voice mixing in a somewhat atypical new wave style. Many of her lyrics deal critically with the imperfections of humanity, everyday life, and politics. Especially in her early works she has created a gloomy, melancholy kind of atmosphere bordering on weltschmerz. In 1985, Clark released the album Pressure Points. Flesh for Lulu

The ready adaptability of this Brixton quartet enabled them to rise from the ashes of London's ill-fated Batcave scene — a curious association to begin with, since these mascaraed, leather-clad poseurs are more closely related to old-fashioned rock than gothic grave-robbing. With undisguised superstar aspirations, they signed to Polydor and released two excellent singles (Restless and Subterraneans). The self-titled album that followed, despite the inclusion of both songs, sinks into the mire, an overlong, overproduced '80s punk take on the Rolling Stones (check the cover of Jigsaw Puzzle), a commodity for which there is no pressing demand. Matador was founded in 1982 for experimenting in sound and visual arts. Their first performance was in June 1982 at the Documenta in Kassel at which time Beate Bartel was still busy with Liaisons Dangereuses and Gudrun Gut and Manon Duursma with Malaria!

Gut and Bartel were both part of the first line-up of Einstuerzende Neubauten. First Gut leaves because she cannot stand Bargeld’s bossing around. Bartel leaves as well after the next gig and together they focus on their own band Mania D.

The Opposition

The Opposition are a long running post-punk band from London, England that featured Ralph Hall, Marcus Bell and Mark Long, and mixed new wave sounds with reggae rhythms. Founded in 1979, The Opposition released their first single on the independent record label Double Vision records. Palais Schaumburg

Palais Schaumburg was a new wave band from Hamburg, Germany. The style was classified as Neue Deutsche Welle, and strongly characterized by their avant garde music and dadaistic attitude. Shortly after their debut album was released, Holger Hiller and FM Einheit left the band. Hiller started his solo career and Einheit joined Einstürzende Neubauten.
